New Names, Same Products to Help You Meet Your Goals

You might have noticed that several of your favorite Thorne supplements have undergone a change. The truth is, a number of our products – while having cleanly labeled Supplement Facts and Other Ingredient lists – had perplexing product names, making it more difficult for you to find the right supplements for your personal health and wellness needs.
To more clearly communicate what a product contains and better help you locate it, whether you are searching the website or your favorite pharmacy, we have changed several product names. A few have a completely new name – others have a minor change – and still others have a new subheading under the full name to better describe its contents.
Let’s break it down.
Oh where, oh where has Meriva® gone?
The most dramatic renaming was on our line of products exclusively featuring curcumin phytosome. Curcumin is the active component of turmeric. Phytosome technology is the delivery method of the curcumin we use, which makes curcumin more absorbable. We called this product “Meriva 500-SF,” using the trademarked brand name of the curcumin raw ingredient that we encapsulated. But this led to some confusion about what the ingredient was. And what did SF even mean? Several years ago, our supplier of curcumin phytosome switched from a soy-sourced phytosome to a sunflower-sourced phytosome – the “SF” meant soy free – but that’s old news now.
To bridge the disconnect between product name and ingredient, we have opted for a simpler, science-forward name – Curcumin Phytosome – to describe exactly what you are receiving. We still exclusively use Meriva, the most clinically studied curcumin on the market, in our entire line of Curcumin Phytosome products, including 60-count, 120-count, NSF Certified for Sport, and sustained-release versions.
The new name makes the most sense – why call Curcumin Phytosome something other than what it is?
Methylco-what?
In other cases, where we originally opted for a more scientific name, we found it was too scientific.
Take for instance Vitamin B12, formerly known as “Methylcobalamin.” Not all forms of specific B vitamins are the same, and we wanted to call attention to how our form of vitamin B12 – as methylcobalamin – was special. Methylcobalamin is the biologically active, tissue-ready form of vitamin B12 and its most readily usable form. Most other vitamin B12 supplements use a less active form known as cyanocobalamin.
Without knowledge about the different forms of vitamin B12, however, “methylcobalamin” can be an intimidating term. It’s certainly a mouthful to pronounce. We have restyled this product with a more user-friendly name: “Vitamin B12.” We’ve also added a secondary line to the product name – “as Methylcobalamin” – to maintain the emphasis that our vitamin B12 continues to be methylcobalamin.
New names, same supplements
In every case, however, be assured that our formulas have not changed – the ingredients remain the same. We insist on complete label transparency – and we think that includes using authentic, honest, product names – so you can feel confident about what you’re putting in your body.
See the chart below for a full list of name changes, and be sure to update your subscriptions to ensure you continue receiving the world’s best supplements.
