New year, new tennis season. But professional U.S. tennis player and Thorne partner Madison Keys hopes for more of the same.

In case you missed all the excitement last year, Keys had quite the season. She secured her seventh WTA title in Eastbourne, made it to the quarterfinals at Wimbledon, and advanced to the semifinals at the U.S. Open for the third time – certainly, a lot to be proud of.

But her momentum heading into 2024 was halted when Keys withdrew from the Australian Open due to a shoulder injury, a move that medical staff recommended.

“It was definitely unfortunate timing to pick up an injury during a really great pre-season and have to miss the first Grand Slam of the year,” Keys says. “But these things happen, and you have no control over the timing.”

Two and a half months out may sound like a decent amount of time, but Keys is all about the long game; between the length of the season, constant travel, and the game itself, professional tennis is arguably one of the most demanding levels of sport out there. So, taking the time to heal was the smartest move she could make, she says.

Every injury is different, but luckily, Keys was able to make small adjustments to her usual training regimen. She didn’t serve for a while and leaned more on Thorne’s EnteroMend®, an innovative botanical extract and amino acid formula that helps maintain a healthy inflammatory balance.*

But otherwise, it was business as usual as Keys worked out, practiced on the court, and engaged in fitness and strength training for other parts of her body.

On the mental side, Keys stayed focused on her recovery plan and what she could control, like how to spend her extra free time. Always the optimist, Keys says her recovery allowed her to stay busy renovating her house, planning her wedding, and watching tennis on television – all things that make her happy.

Now that Keys’ shoulder has fully healed, it’s time to return to the court. She says she’s feeling great and ready to get back into competition mode.

“I always put my body first,” Keys says. “Knowing my matches will be extremely competitive, you have to go into it at 100 percent.”

One of her first tournaments will be the Credit One Charleston Open, a favorite of hers, and for good reason. In 2013, an 18-year-old Keys made it to the quarterfinals before losing to Venus Williams. In 2015, Keys was the runner-up, and in 2019, the champion.

Beyond her tournament history, Keys has always had a soft spot for Charleston’s culture, making it the perfect environment for her to get back into the swing of things.

“I love Charleston – it’s one of my favorite cities,” she says. “I’ve had a lot of success here, and I’ve also made great friends with people who work there, and the fans are incredible.”

Keys can also look forward to having extra friends in attendance this year as Thorne sponsors the Credit One Charleston Open for the first time. Our manufacturing campus in Summerville, South Carolina, is just 30 minutes from the tournament, so Keys can count on some love from the Thorne crowd.

“I’m really excited that Thorne is a sponsor of the Credit One Charleston Open this year,” she says. “It’ll be nice to see some familiar faces again and the Thorne name around the tournament too!”
