Moving Through Fitness “Seasons” with Trainer Kaisa Keranen

Obstacles are a love-hate for anyone who enjoys fitness. In the case of injuries and mental blocks, it’s mostly hate – you have to take time off to heal physically or overcome a mental challenge to achieve your goal. For Kaisa Keranen, movement coach and the co-founder of Just Move, these difficulties are her “seasons.”
“Just like my life, my body and my relationship to movement go through seasons,” she says. “I’m currently in an intense season in my personal life, so my movement is an outlet for me. Workouts are intense because I need a space to be intense and to get that out.”
Kaisa says injuries can be an opportunity to learn about yourself, describing her personal health and wellness journey as “a roller coaster ride.”
“I am constantly pushing myself to see what’s possible, and over the years I’ve learned the balance of pushing myself while also listening to my body,” she says.
Although slowing down doesn’t come naturally to Kaisa, she has come to appreciate it over time. During the first year of the COVID pandemic, for example, she mainly did gentle recovery and mobility workouts. These days, she focuses on "smart" workouts.
"I want to be moving and feeling good in my body when I’m 85 years old, so these days I try to remember it’s all about smart movement that is sustainable and that my body feels good doing,” she says.
Movement has always had a place in Kaisa’s life; she played soccer and ran track growing up. Early on, she dealt with obstacles. Kaisa had depression and battled a plague of injuries during her collegiate track career at the University of Washington.
Still, Kaisa credits her collegiate career as the catalyst that sparked her interest in personal training. She received a master’s degree in exercise science, sports performance, and injury prevention.
Today she works as a personal trainer and fitness educator. Kaisa has been featured in several digital magazines, including Vogue, Shape, SELF, Harper's Bazaar, and ESPNW. Most notably, former first lady Michelle Obama asked Kaisa to be a trainer in the “Let’s Move” digital campaign.
Kaisa’s Just Move is a workout platform that focuses on bringing movement to everybody and every body without the usual focus on weight loss.
“I believe that health is a feeling, not a look, and I’m on a mission to help more people around the world get up and get moving,” she says.
With an array of at-home workouts for all levels, Just Move offers different types of movement, including strength, cardio and mobility, yoga, dance, and more. Kaisa hopes her platform will help users find joy in movement and encourage them to lead a healthier, happier life.
“My number one tip is to just start,” she says. “No matter who you are or where you are – just start! A daily movement habit will absolutely change your life – even just five minutes a day. So remember that anything is better than nothing.”
As a lifelong athlete, Kaisa is always on the move. She exercises seven times a week, with four of those being hard workout days with her trainer. One full day is devoted to filming full workouts. Plus, she squeezes in mobility-related recovery exercises once or twice a week.
Her favorite workouts focus on strength building, power work, and agility. The only kind of exercise she really dreads is aerobic conditioning because, she says, they tend to bore her.
Kaisa doesn’t have a specific diet that she sticks to, and she doesn’t limit any foods, but she stays conscious of the food she eats and believes in fueling her body for peak performance.
“I am the queen of leftovers and could eat the same thing for an entire week straight,” she says. “Although I love food, I see it much more as fuel than something that needs to constantly vary or taste great.”
Although she isn’t strict with her food, Kaisa does stick to a regular supplement routine; she’s been drinking Thorne’s RecoveryPro and Catalyte over the last four months and swears by it, saying she feels amazing.
“Really all the supplements I take, I think they are a huge reason that I’m feeling and performing my best,” she says. “I’m 36 and currently training and performing at my peak!”
Thorne is thrilled to be partnering with Kaisa and excited to bring you more health and wellness content. Check out Kaisa’s personal collection and follow her on Instagram @kaisafit, TikTok, and YouTube.
