Tennis Star Madison Keys Shares Her Training and Wellness Tips

Tennis Star Madison Keys is not a person to shy away from hard work. At 14, she went pro. When she was 21, she achieved the #7 rank in the world. The 26-year-old, who consistently ranks in the WTA’s top 25, has also earned five career singles titles.
It’s Madison’s work ethic that’s led to her success on the tennis court. We caught up with the tennis star and asked her to share her wellness secrets, what it’s like to train as a pro tennis player, and what some of her favorite supplements are in her gym bag.
A Pro Tennis Routine
To keep her body in tip-top shape, Madison knows that means ensuring her body gets the right nutrients throughout the day. Her breakfast consists of proteins and healthy fats, and a typical meal is eggs, toast, and avocado. Throw in some coffee and she’s ready for a mid-morning dynamic warm-up and two hours of practice.
Madison refuels at lunch with a protein-packed salad, and then either a fruit smoothie or a protein shake for additional muscle recovery. Then it’s back to training where she hits the gym with some weights, cardio, and a high-intensity full-body workout.
An intense daily workout like that means the body is hungry for the nutrients it needs to recover. Madison shared with us some of her post-workout favorites.
“It’s usually a carb + protein + veggie… I love cooking when I’m home, so some of my favorite things I’ve made recently for dinner are pasta with Italian sausage and broccoli, salmon burgers, roast pork lion, and I love a fresh slaw.”
And whatever nutritional gaps she can’t get with her meals, she fills with high-quality supplements.
“I take a lot of Thorne supplements, some morning and some night – Basic Nutrients 2/Day, D-1,000, Super EPA, Glutathione-SR, [Curcumin Phytosome], Iron Bisglycinate, and Glucosamine & Chondroitin. Then I also have the Amino Complex after a workout and a protein smoothie at lunch.”
Q&A on Her Training and Favorite Thorne Supplements
Q: As a professional tennis player, what key areas of your health do you focus on?
“I think the most important areas to me are energy, recovery, and sleep. If I’m training or in a tournament with matches on back-to-back days, then I focus on those things that make sure I’m physically at my best. I do really long training sessions outside when it’s hot in Florida, where I’m based, so I have to be on top of putting the right things into my body to stay hydrated and energized.
“Depending on where I’m playing a tournament, it could be just as hot as Florida and a match could go a few hours. If my body is feeling good physically, then it allows me to play more freely and focus on my tennis.”
Q: How did Thorne become a part of your training?
“My trainer got me into Thorne after he discovered the products. He and I have worked together for years so when he said he found something great, I knew it must be. I love the quality of the products and the fact that I can rely on them to keep me feeling my best.”
Q: What are the top Thorne products you swear by?
“For recovery, my go-to is always Amino Complex. I use that every day and actually sometimes during matches too. I take a lot of Thorne supplements daily, but if I had to pick the most important one, it would be D-1,000.”
Q: Have you tried a Thorne’s health test to test your blood to optimize one aspect of your health?
“I tried Thorne's Gut Health Test, and it was super insightful. I’m also very interested in trying others this off-season.”
Q: Do you have a favorite Thorne recipe you can share?
“It probably seems like a very basic recipe, but I love it…. I usually do one banana, a handful of strawberries, a cup of almond milk, ice, and Thorne’s chocolate-flavored Whey Protein Isolate.”
Q: What nutrition and training advice do you have for young tennis athletes?
“Probably the most important advice is to always remember what you put into your body is going to impact how your body performs. But to also find what works best for you because it’s not the same for everyone.”
