Thorne Research has made the decision to discontinue manufacturing our original multiple-mineral formulas – Biomins (M201) and Biomin II (M202). Since the introduction of these two aspartate-chelate formulas, other mineral chelate formulas – such as citrate-chelate formulas – have become available. We are discontinuing these two asparate-chelate formulas because we believe the scientific literature now indicates that citrate-chelate formulas demonstrate superior absorption compared to asparate-chelate formulas.
We recommend Citramins (M249; the multiple mineral citrate-chelate formula with copper and iron) as an alternative to Biomins. We recommend Citramins II (M250; the multiple mineral citrate-chelate formula without copper and iron) as an alternative to Biomin II.
a complete mineral formula with aspartate chelates to promote energy production,* without copper and iron
Individuals at high risk for mineral deficiencies include the elderly due to deteriorating digestion, children and teenagers because of poor diet, individuals with eating disorders, and those suffering from chronic diseases. Certain prescription medications can also result in mineral deficiencies. The amount of minerals in fruits and vegetables depends on the soil they are grown in; therefore, even healthy individuals who maintain a good diet are at risk for mineral deficiencies because of mineral-depleted soil.
Many companies provide minerals that are chelated, or bound to, whole proteins or peptides from potentially allergenic substances like soy, calling them amino acid chelates. Thorne's individual minerals are chelated to amino acids or organic acids via a molecular reaction that provides a predictable, high quality, hypoallergenic chelate.
Biomin II offers the same multiple-mineral formula as Biomins but without iron and copper. Iron and copper can act as pro-oxidants (working the opposite way from antioxidants) in certain situations, so many individuals prefer having the option of a multiple-mineral formula that does not contain these two minerals.
In addition, many individuals do not need an iron supplement, including women who are no longer menstruating and most men. Individuals at low risk for an iron deficiency often do not need supplemental iron unless they have a chronic condition that renders them iron deficient.
While copper is an essential cofactor for many enzymes in the body, some individuals have developed copper toxicity due to disease processes or external over-exposure to copper (for example, copper pipes). Therefore, Biomin II provides a highly absorbable citrate chelate formula without these two minerals.*
